Women set 54-hole record

The University of Wisconsin women’s golf team set a 54-hole school record Monday at the Duramed Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall GC in Hanahan, S.C. UW’s 14-over-par 878 (288-295-295) set the school record by one stroke; the previous record was set in 2001 at the Legends Shootout in Franklin, Ind.

The Badgers shot a school 18-hole team record 288 in the opening round, and followed up with two 295s to finish the tournament. It was the first time in school history the team had shot three-consecutive sub-300 rounds. The team finished in sixth place.

Georgia won the event with a tournament-record 14-under-par 850 followed by Florida State (857) and North Carolina (857). Gerogia’s Marta Silva Zamora was the medalist with an 8-under-par 208.

Wisconsin’s Jessie Gerry finished in a tie for seventh with a 2-under-par 214 (72-70-72). Gerry’s total was a career best and 54-hole school record, beating the 215 she set last September as a freshman when she won the Badger Golf Invitational.

Senior Molly Schemm, who recorded the low round for the Badgers with a 69 in the opener, tied for 32nd at 6-over-par 222 (69-76-77) with junior Carly Werwie (74-76-72). Freshman Alyssa Elliott finished at 7-over-par 223 (73-74-76) to tie for 34th. Last year's top returning scorer, senior Kelsey Verbeten, rounded out the scoring by tying for 60th at 230 (80-75-75).

The Badgers are off until they host their own tournament from Sept. 27-28 at University Ridge GC in Verona. The 15-team Lady Northern Invitational features all 11 Big Ten teams and is a preview of the course for the Big Ten Women’s Golf Championship, to be held at University Ridge from April 23-25, 2010.
