Woltman named to Big Ten second team

For the second consecutive year, University of Wisconsin golfer Dan Woltman has earned second-team All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Tuesday. Woltman tied for 10th at the Big Ten Conference Championships last weekend, his highest career finish at the conference meet.

The honor comes one day after Woltman was selected to participate in the NCAA East Regional. Woltman led the Badgers with a 72.68 stroke average this season, the lowest scoring average in school history. During the spring season he finished among the top 10 in three of four tournaments, including a tie for first at the Boilermaker Invitational.

That performance earned him co-Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors, becoming the first UW golfer to win the award since 2005. Woltman, a senior, is attempting to become the first Badger to qualify for the NCAA Championships three straight years when he takes part in the East Regional May 14-16.

The Big Ten also announced the honorees from each of the conference’s 11 men’s golf squads for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award; the Wisconsin recipient is senior Pat Duffy. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
