FEATURED COURSE
A new day dawned this spring at the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells with the opening of Wild Rock GC.
After a couple of seasons without a championship golf course – thanks to the removal of the old Wilderness Woods course and a water-logged grow-in which pushed back completion of Wild Rock – golf made a stunning comeback at the Wilderness in 2008. The new course is a creation of Dr. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry, and it is destined to take its place among Wisconsin’s best.
The design makes good use of the glacial terrain for which Wisconsin Dells is famous, but several holes also explore an old stone quarry purchased prior to construction. The course features some impressive elevation changes, including several super-elevated tees from which players are going to love launching drives.
Nos. 13-16 flow through the quarry section, and there are a few noteworthy holes. The 13th is a demanding par-4 at 456 yards from the back tee with a canyon hard against the left side of the green. No. 14 is a relatively short par-5 at 535 yards, but it has a shallow green that can be hard to hold with a long second shot. And the par-3 15th at 179 yards is an all-carry par-3 which is essentially a large green situated on one side of a canyon and and series of tees scattered around the periphery on the opposite side. Come up short and it’s time to tee up another ball.
Par-72 Wild Rock measures 7,418 yards from the back tees, so there’s enough length here to challenge any player. But there are five sets of tees, and the forward markers measure just 5,132 yards.
Nine holes from the old Wilderness Woods course – including an island green par-3 – have been retained and now make up the Woods Family Course, a shorter layout perfect for families and novices.
