U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR PUBLIC LINKS
Werwie makes it to match play

Kenosha’s Carly Werwie has qualified for match play at the 33rd U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship at Red Tail GC in Devens, Mass.

Werwie, who plays on the University of Wisconsin women’s golf team, tied for 51st place in stroke play qualifying, shooting 6-over-par 150 (76-74). She tees off against Canada’s Sara-Maude Juneau today at 10:48 a.m. CST.

Three other players from Wisconsin failed to make the cut. Greenfield’s Michelle Mathwick tied for 70th at 10-over 154; Edgerton’s Allyssa Ferrell tied for 94th at 13-over 157; and Osceola’s Lindsay Danielson tied for 123rd at 19-over 163.

A total of 64 players will compete in match play events over the next four days, with the 36-hole championship match being held Saturday, June 27.

After one round of play at the Wisconsin State Golf Association Governor’s Cup sponsored by Titleist, reigning champion Miles McConnell is in contention to defend his title.

McConnell, who plays out of Odana Hills GC in Madison, shot a 1-under-par 71 Tuesday in the tournament’s first round at The Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls. His round included five birdies and four bogeys.

Tied for second at even-par 72 are Jim Doing of Hawks Landing GC in Verona and Kevin Cahill of Merrill Hills CC in Waukesha. Cahill just last week won the WSGA Match Play Championship.

Four players are tied for fourth at 1-over-par 73: Todd Schaap of Ives Grove Golf Links in Sturtevant, Thomas Komassa of Muskego Lakes CC in Muskego, Pat Boyle of Meadowbrook CC in Racine and Glenn Londre of Naga-Waukee GC in Pewaukee.

The final round got underway this morning.
