Vukmir wins WWGA first flight

Elena Vukmir of Wauwatosa won the first flight at the Women's Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship at Shawnee Country Club in Lima, Ohio.

Vukmir, who will be a senior at Drake University in the fall, beat Bambee Dela Paz of the Philippines, 1-up, in the final Saturday. She missed qualifying for the championship flight by two strokes.

Wisconsin women playing in the championship flight were Katie Elliott of Madison, Erin Sharpee of Green Bay and Lindsey Solberg of Verona. Elliott, a former player for the University of Wisconsin, lost 1-up to eventual winner Taylore Karle of Scottsdale, Ariz. in the second round. Sharpee, who will play at the University of Nebraska in fall, lost in the quarterfinals, 5 and 4, to Dottie Ardina, the eventual runner-up. Solberg lost in the second round to Abby Bools of Hickory, S.C., 2 and 1.


Pat Boyle won the 83rd Milwaukee District Golf Association Match Play Championship on Sunday, beating Joe Kunick, 2-up, in the final at Tripoli CC in Milwaukee.

Boyle, a two-time State Amateur champion from South Milwaukee, won his second MDGA title.

Kelly Kretz of Antigo earned the top spot in 36-hole qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

Kretz, a Marquette University player, finished at 4-under-par 138 at Washington County GC in Hartford. On June 18, Kretz was the runner-up at the Wisconsin State Golf Association Match Play Championship.

First-round leader Andy Hansen of Mequon was second at 139, and Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay was third at 140. Hansen broke the competitive course record with a 64 in the first round but followed it with a 75.

Kretz, Hansen and Schultz advance to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, July 13-18 at the Jimmie Austin OU GC in Norman, Okla.

The alternates are Nic Weber of Hartland (143) and Max Hosking of Madison (144).

The first round of the 2009 U.S. Womens Amateur Public Links Championship gets underway today at Red Tail GC in Devens, Mass.

Wisconsin players competing in the event are Lindsay Danielson of Osceola, Michelle Mathwick of Greenfield, Allyssa Ferrell of Edgerton and Carly Werwie of Kenosha.

Today is the first round of stroke play qualifying, and the second round will be played tomorrow. The first round of match play gets underway Wednesday, with the 36-hole championship match being held Saturday, June 27.
