WWSGA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Vukmir and Schemm win Bestball; Verbetens claim Mother-Daughter

College players Elena Vukmir and Molly Schemm of Muskego Lakes CC in Muskego swept both the gross and net titles at the Wisconsin State Golf Association Bestball Championship on Monday. The tournament was held at West Bend CC.

Vukmir, who plays for Drake University, and Schemm, who plays for the University of Wisconsin, combined in the gross championship on a round of 67, which converted to a net score of 64. All 60 of the two-player teams in the field were eligible to compete in both divisions.

Four strokes behind Vukmir and Schemm in the gross category were Maureen Liddy and Stephanie Pott of Oneida G&CC in Green Bay with a 71. Finishing in third place with a score of 72 was the duo of Syd Wells and Maggie Leef, representing Riverside GC in Menominee, Mich.

In net competition, Vukmir and Schemm were followed by two teams that shot 65. Kathy Algiers and Deb Toll of Ried GC in Appleton and Sarah Holtz and Kelly Moehn of Mid-Vallee GC in DePere tied for second place.

Another recent WWSGA tournament ended in similar fashion, with dual winners.

Jean and Kelsey Verbeten of Green Bay CC swept the gross and net titles at the WWSGA Mother-Daughter Championship in late June at Maple Bluff CC in Madison. Kelsie, the daughter, who also plays at Wisconsin, won the WWSGA Match Play Championship in June.

The Verbetens shot 80 at Maple Bluff CC on June 24 to earn the gross championship title over two teams from Tripoli CC, which recorded rounds of 83. One of those teams consisted of Pat Kraft and Kelly Petroff and the other was Reece and Casey Peterson.

With their handicaps figured in, the Verbetens’ 80 turned into a net score of 71.7. The net runners-up were Lee Kelly and Patricia Ranum of Maple Bluff CC with a score of 72.5.

The State Mother-Daughter, played under an alternate-shot format, expanded its eligibility rules this year. For the first time, the tournament was open to mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, stepmothers and stepdaughters and mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. Twenty-six teams participated.

The next event on the WWSGA schedule is a big one. The State Stroke Play Championship will be contested at Fox Valley GC in Kaukuana next week (July 13-14). The 54-hole tournament is conducted jointly by the WWSGA and the Wisconsin Women’s Public Links Golf Association. For more information, visit www.wwsga.net.
