U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR QUALIFYING
Three make the field

Three Wisconsin golfers have qualified for the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Green Bay’s Kelsey Verbeten and Madison’s Jessie Gerry, both players on the University of Wisconsin women’s golf team, qualified for the event July 21 at Edina CC in Edina, Minn. Verbeten tied with two others for the top spot, shooting 71, and Gerry shot 75. Madison’s Katie Elliott, a former UW golfer, was named an alternate.

At Wood Wind GC in Westfield, Ind., Edgerton’s Allyssa Ferrell qualified by shooting 73. Ferrell, a 17-year-old senior-to-be at Edgerton High School, recently took second place in Wisconsin’s American Junior Golf Association event, the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends, which was held at the Legend at Bergamont in Oregon. She was the 2008 Wisconsin State Golf Association Junior Girls Player of the Year.

The 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur will be held Aug. 3-9 at Old Warson CC in St. Louis.

After five days and 74 holes, a winner was decided at the RBC Canadian Open.

Nathan Green beat a heavily-favored Retief Goosen at Glen Abbey GC in Oakville, Ontario. The Australian made par on the second playoff hole to win his first PGA Tour title in 112 starts.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly tied for fifth at 13-under 275 (65-67-72-71) with Lee Janzen and Brandt Snedeker, one stroke behind third-place finishers Anthony Kim and Jason Dufner.

Wisconsin native Mark Wilson tied for 24th at 10-under 278 after shooting rounds of 68-71-69-70. Appleton native J.P. Hayes missed the cut.
