FEATURED COURSE
When the Bachmanns decided to turn what had been their prized dairy cattle breeding operation in Sheboygan Falls into a golf course, the family realized it had a potential problem in regard to the new golf facility’s location. In short, the Bachmanns recognized the exceptionally long shadow cast by four nearby courses owned by the Kohler Co.
“You’re going up in the territory of four of the greatest courses in the Midwest, and the country, really,” said David Bachmann, Jr. in 2003. “I felt I wanted something that would instantly be recognized as having the potential to be as good as those.”
Thus, the Bull at Pinehurst Farms needed an identity all its own, and it got one when Bachmann hired Jack Nicklaus to design his course. The Bull’s full 18 holes – Wisconsin’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature course – opened for play in 2003.
The Bull measures 7,332 from its championship tees and plays over rugged terrain. With ridges, valleys, woodlots and a section of the Onion River to contend with, players are challenged from the first tee to the 18th green.
Halfway between is the terrific par-4 ninth hole, playing uphill toward the clubhouse into the prevailing wind. At 453 yards from the back tee, this can be a difficult hole. And the uphill approach can be intimidating thanks to a yawning bunker visible on the front-left corner of the green and what appears from the fairway to be a tiny green.
The Bull’s other finishing hole is the 485-yard 18th. All but the forward tees require players to hit over an expanse of water, and the green lies hard against a creek and wetlands guarding the right side. Therefore, bailing-out a bit left isn’t a bad choice on The Bull’s final hole.
