Top tournament venue attracts all kinds of players
The Bog in Saukville has become one of Wisconsin’s top tournament golf courses since it opened in 1995, but it’s still a favorite of daily-fee players looking for top-notch conditions.
The Arnold Palmer signature design has hosted the Wisconsin State Open (2006), the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship (2004) and several other WSGA championships and United States Golf Association qualifying events.
Palmer’s design makes terrific use of the property’s rugged, thickly forested landscape, and there are some unique challenges awaiting first-time visitors.
For example, how should one negotiate the short par-4 12th hole, which ranges from 239 to 348 yards, depending on the tee? (There are five sets on the course, from the White tees at 5,110 yards to the Blacks at 7,221 yards.) No. 12 is complicated by a creek running right in front of the shallow green, and thick woods await behind the putting surface. It’s a true risk-reward challenge, as players going for the green from a distance will have little room for error.
The next two holes are also impressive. No. 13 is a short par-3 offering tremendous views of the surrounding countryside, followed by the par-5 14th, a dogleg-left measuring 528 yards from the back tee.
And the finishing hole is a beauty. The par-4 18th measures 430 yards from the elevated back tee.
The Bog – the home course of the Marquette University golf team since 2003 – also boasts exceptional practice facilities. Former Marquette player Matt Hilton, now a teaching pro, will host a seasonal David Leadbetter Golf Academy this summer at the course.
