MONDAY ROUND-UP
Madison’s Steve Stricker on Sunday missed a 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole at The Barclays, costing him a chance to battle out winner Heath Slocum in a playoff.
Stricker and Slocum were tied at 9-under-par heading into the final hole of the first tournament of the FedExCup playoffs, and both needed par to avoid a playoff with three players – Padraig Harrington, Tiger Woods and Ernie Els – who were already in the clubhouse. But Stricker drove his tee shot into the sand bunker, and his par-saving putt lipped out. Slocum, who also found the bunker, was able to get up and down and clinched the victory with a 20-foot par putt.
“Even though (I) came out on the short end of the deal, ... that’s why we’re all out here, to get into the heat of the battle, under the gun like that, to see how you can handle it coming down the stretch,” Stricker said.
Stricker finished at 8-under-par 276 (69-70-68-69) and earned $495,000. He remains in second place, 1,276 points behind Woods, in the FedExCup standings.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly tied for 52nd at 4-over 288 (72-74-76-66). Pewaukee native Mark Wilson tied for 58th at 5-over 289 (72-75-72-70).
