At one point during the final round of the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday, Steve Stricker was tied for the lead. But the Madison resident couldn’t outlast Ryan Palmer, and he finished in third place, earning $374,000.
Stricker, who is considered one of the better putters on the PGA Tour, lipped out a 5-foot birdie putt on the 12th and missed from 8 feet on the 14th. On the 18th he hit into the bunker, and his shot went 20 feet long. He missed that birdie putt, also.
“I did leave a couple out there,” Stricker said. “It’s a little disappointing. I hit the ball great today, gave myself a lot of opportunities. All of a sudden, I found myself doubting a couple of reads. I was getting confused a couple of times.”
Stricker shot rounds of 66-67-69-65 to finish at 13-under-par 267. It was his second top-10 finish in the PGA Tour’s two 2010 stops. Palmer finished at 265 (65-66-68-66), and Robert Allenby finished in second place at 266 (65-67-67-67).
Pewaukee native Mark Wilson tied for 20th at 6-under-par 274 (68-67-71-68) and earned $61,820.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly withdrew from the tournament after the first round. It was reported that he was suffering from lower back pains.
