Monday Round-up
Woltman wins Northeast Amateur; Steinhofer takes Fischer

Beaver Dam’s Dan Woltman won the prestigious Northeast Amateur Invitational in record-breaking fashion over the weekend after he closed with a 64 Saturday at Wannamoisett CC in Rhode Island. But a tough field full of top amateurs was hardly his only concern going into the tournament.

Woltman, 22, told the Providence Journal after his win that he had been suffering the effects of Swine Flu in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The former UW-Madison player had to withdraw from the Sunnehanna Amateur, another top national amateur championship, a few week earlier because he was sick.

Woltman won the 48th Northeast Amateur with rounds of 70-64-67-64–265 to establish a new tournament scoring record at 11 under par. The previous record of 267 was established last year by Brendan Gielow. Tied for second at 268 were Bryan Westley of Chapin, S.C. and David Holmes of Knoxville, Tenn.

Former Marquette University player Mike Van Sickle of Wexford, Pa., also participated and finished in a tie for 61st place. Van Sickle shot 72-69-72-73–286.

In winning, Woltman joined an impressive list of Northeast Amateur champions including Ben Crenshaw (1973), Hal Sutton (1980), David Duval (1992), Luke Donald (2000, ‘01) and Anthony Kim (2004).

Closer to home, another prestigious event was held over the weekend in Janesville. The annual Ray Fischer Amateur Championship was won by Madison’s Andrew Steinhofer, a recent graduate of Madison LaFollette High School.

Steinhofer closed with a birdie-birdie finish to shoot 69 in the final round on Sunday at Riverside GC. He finished at 12-under-par 276 and won the title by one stroke over Tom Halla of Pewaukee, Patrick Duffy of Appleton, Matt Behm of Janesville and Kelly Kretz of Antigo.
