The UW-Green Bay men’s golf team won a sudden-death playoff Tuesday in the season-opening John Piper Intercollegiate, defeating host school Bowling Green.
The two teams entered the third and final round in a dead heat, and both schools shot tournament-best rounds of 283 Tuesday to finish in a tie.
The Phoenix had three players – Aaron Pearson, Chad Ebert and Adam Austreng – fire 3-under-par rounds of 69 to lead Green Bay on the final day. As a result, each of Green Bay’s golfers had a sub-70 round in the tournament and the team did not have a player place outside of the top-25.
Austin Ehlenfeldt, who began the day in first place among the 69-player field, finished in a tie for fifth after a 76 in the final round. He posted a 54-hole score of 1-under-par 215 to earn his fifth top-five finish as a Phoenix.
Brady Mork ended in a tie for 10th with a score of 2-over-par 218 (73-69-76). Pearson and Ebert shared 14th place at 219, while Austreng moved up 14 spots in the final 18 holes to snag a share of 21st position.
Third-place Indianapolis was 15 shots back at even-par 879. Dayton’s Jeff Hodapp and Bowling Green’s Matt Schneider won co-medalist honors after finishing at 5-under 211.
Green Bay is next in action Sept. 21 and 22 at the Erv Kaiser Invitational in Oxbow, N.D.
