COLLEGE GOLF
Marquette wins Big East title

Marquette University brought home its first Big East golf championship this week with a narrow two stroke victory over defending champion Louisville. Marquette shot 291-288-295–874 at Traditions GC in Hebron, Ky.

MU was led by senior Ted Gray, who claimed medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Gray shot 68-68-75–211 to finish five strokes ahead of runner-up Keegan Bradley of St. John’s University.

“It took me almost four total years to win an event, but the team victory is even better,” Gray said.

The conference championship was the first in the history of the golf program at Marquette, which joined the Big East in 2005. As a result of winning the title, MU received an automatic bid for NCAA regional play in the middle of May.

In addition to Gray’s dominating performance, the Golden Eagles got important contributions from the entire team. Junior Mike Van Sickle had another strong tournament, shooting 72-74-73–219 to tie for fourth individually. Senior Michael Bielawski was right behind in a tie for seventh place with scores of 72-73-75–220.

Freshman Kelly Kretz tied for 33rd place (83-73-74–230) and junior Dustin Schwab tied for 42nd (79-81-73–233).
