Marquette University hires new golf coach

Steve Bailey is the new head men’s golf coach at Marquette University. MU announced the hiring of Bailey, formerly the associate head coach at Northwestern University, on Tuesday.

Bailey replaces coach Tim Grogan, who resigned in June after 19 seasons leading the program.

“I see a ton of potential at Marquette University, and my wife Bethany and I are excited to join the Blue and Gold family,” Bailey said. “In speaking with alumni, the passion for Marquette athletics has been really evident.

“We're going to be successful with a solid work ethic and strong team values. Our overall focus will be a commitment to excellence with an emphasis on getting better every day.”

Bailey worked at Northwestern under head coach Pat Goss since 2005, first as an assistant coach, then since 2008 as associate head coach. The native of Virginia Beach, Va., established a reputation at Northwestern as a strong recruiter. That, among other things, were attractive to MU athletic director Steve Cottingham.

“We are delighted to welcome Steve and his wife Bethany to Marquette and to Milwaukee," Cottingham said. "Coach Bailey has demonstrated the ability to recruit to the Midwest and has shown that he can be successful at the highest level in collegiate golf."

Bailey was also responsible for the day to day operations of the Northwestern golf program, including coordinating team practices and scheduling competitive events. And he was tournament director for the Big Ten Match Play Championship.

Before moving to Northwestern Bailey worked for the American Junior Golf Association, including several seasons as tournament director.

Former MU player Kyle Murphy was among those who sought the job. Murphy, an assistant coach under Grogan, said last week that he applied for the head coaching position.

MU tied for ninth place at the Big East Men’s Golf Championship in April. The team was guided down the stretch of the season by Murphy and associate athletic director Jim Nasiopulos after Grogan took a leave of absence in April.
