The Maple Bluff CC duo of Val Fernandez and Greg Moser won the Wisconsin State Golf Association Senior Bestball Championship on Tuesday. Fernandez and Moser, both 56-year-olds who live in Madison, won the title in a playoff over Steve Johnson of Ozaukee CC and Mike Stolz of North Shore CC. Johnson and Stolz reside in Mequon.
Both teams finished the 36-hole tournament with identical scores (67-67–134) at Brown Country GC in Oneida.
The third-place team was Tim Murphy of Eau Claire G&CC and John Laehn of Wausau CC, who shot 68-67–135.
In Super-Senior competition, for players 65 and older, Mike Sorgi and Roger Kriete of Blue Mound G&CC in Wauwatosa won the title with scores of 70-70–140.
Gene Haas of Westmoor CC in Brookfield and Archie Dadian of Oakwood Park GC in Franklin finished second after shooting 73-69–142. Finishing third (72-71–143) were John Kaufman of Tuckaway CC in Franklin and Jim Thiel of Morningstar GC in Waukesha.
In other amateur golf news this week, Donna and Chris Bandt of Branch River CC in Cato won the gross division title at the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association Mother-Son Championship. The Bandts shot a 2-under-par 70 at the Bull at Pinehurst Farms in Sheboygan Falls on Monday.
Finishing second in the gross competition were Sue and Greg Daggett of Lakeshore Municipal GC in Oshkosh with a score of 71. Tied for third at 78 were Jill and Billy Strey of Twin Lakes CC and Jeanne Zeske of Naga-Waukee GC in Pewaukee and Steven Zeske of the Wisconsin PGA Junior GC.
Sue and Greg Daggett also won the net title with a 10-under-par 62. The Bandts were the runner-ups with a net score of 64. Tied for third with rounds of 67 were Dolly and Bob Zeihen of Brighton Dale Links in Kansasville and Diane and Scott Schwab of Whitewater CC.
The Mother-Son Championship is held under a modified alternate-shot format in which both players hit drives on each hole. Then one of the drives is selected and the players alternate shots from there until the ball is holed.
The Bull at Pinehurst Farms hosted the Wisconsin State Amateur Championship last week.
