WWSGA/WWPLGA STATE STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
When Rheba Mabie set out Tuesday with a group of three college players at the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association/Wisconsin Women’s Public Links Golf Association State Stroke Play Championship, the 30-something was three shots back from the lead.
But by the end of the final round, Mabie had outplayed her younger counterparts, closing with a 1-under-par 71, which put her in a tie at even-par 216 with University of Wisconsin player Kelsey Verbeten. Mabie, who lives in Boulder Junction and plays out of SentryWorld GC in Stevens Point, then beat Verbeten on the first playoff hole at Fox Valley GC in Kaukauna.
Mabie, who is in the Midwest Clown Association Hall of Fame, recorded five birdies – three of them on the front nine – during her final round. Both Mabie and Verbeten missed short birdie putts on No. 18 to force the playoff.
Going into the third and final round, Reedsburg CC’s Ellie Arkin was leading Verbeten and Jessica Hauser by two strokes. But Arkin closed with a 78, recording six bogeys and a double bogey. Hauser, who plays out of North Hills CC in Menomonee Falls, tied for second with Arkin at 220 after closing with a 76.
Last year’s champion, Carly Werwie of Oakwood Park GC in Kenosha, wasn’t back to defend her title. She was playing the North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst, where she failed to qualify for match play.
Elena Vukmir of Muskego Lakes CC in Muskego was fifth at 222 (74-75-73). Syd Wells, the 2007 champion (then Syd Moore), finished in a tie for sixth at 225 (73-76-76).
