Krause holds steady

We’ve all heard the saying “The third time is the charm,” and for Steve Krause the old adage turned out to be true on Wednesday at Mascoutin GC in Berlin. The opening round co-leader of the Wisconsin State Senior Open earned his first victory in the event in his third year of eligibility.

Krause, the 2008 runner-up, was steady for most of his round, but the win did not come without its challenges. Bill Lindmark of Green Bay and Dan Buckley of Rhinelander threatened to take the title away at several different points during the day.

Krause, a Hales Corners resident, built a comfortable lead through the first 13 holes with three birdies and a lone bogey. The lead, however, almost vanished when a wayward drive on 14 left him with a double bogey. After another bogey on 15, Krause found himself in a tie for the lead with Lindmark. With the tournament hanging in the balance, the champion took the lead back for good as he stuffed a short iron to 2 feet and converted it for birdie on the par-5 16th.  The birdie helped Krause card an even-par 72 and a two-round total of 3-under-par 141.

“I have a lot admiration for the names on this trophy,” Krause said. “I’m proud to add mine to the list.”

Lindmark finished in second place at even-par 144 (71-73). Buckley and two amateurs, Paul Williamson of Holmen and Terry Flesch of Fond du Lac, tied for third at 3-over-par 147.

Appleton’s Paul Schwarz, the 2008 champion, tied for 24th at 9-over 153 (78-75).

Krause earned $1,000 for the finish. He will attempt to defend his title when the 2010 Wisconsin State Senior Open takes place at Hidden Glen GC in Cedarburg.
