MONDAY ROUND-UP Nov. 5, 2007
One stroke made all the difference in the world for Skip Kendall on Sunday.
The Fox Point native missed five birdie putts inside 12 feet on the back nine at the Nationwide Tour Championship and finished one stroke away from earning full exemption on the 2008 PGA Tour. After starting the final tournament of the season 22nd on the Nationwide money list, Kendall’s tie for 21st and $7,411 paycheck put him in 26th place on the money list, $1,094 behind Jimmy Walker; the top-25 earn full exemption on the PGA Tour. But because he finished in the top-40, he is exempt into the final round of the PGA Tour qualifying tournament.
Kendall started out strong in 2007, taking first place in the Chitimacha Louisiana Open, the second tournament of the season, and finishing in a tie for second the following week at the Livermore Valley Wine Country Championship. But since then he’s struggled, finishing inside the top-10 only one other time and missing the cut in 10 of 23 events this year, including the two tournaments leading up to the Nationwide Tour Championship. He earned $195,802 this season.
On the PGA Tour, Appleton native J.P. Hayes tied for ninth at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic presented by Wal-Mart and finished 114th on the PGA Tour money list with $890,815. The top-125 earn exemption on the 2008 PGA Tour.
Hayes, who led the tournament after round one, shot rounds of 65-69-72-71 and finished at 12-under 276. It was his second-best finish of the season; a tie for sixth at The Players Championship on May 13 was his best.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly missed the cut, but he finished No. 36 on the 2007 money list with $1,978,034.
Steve Stricker, also of Madison, ended his season after his second-place finish in the inaugural FedExCup in September, but he finished fourth on the money list with $4,663,077, behind leader Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh.
