Kelly receives honorary doctorate from alma mater

Paging Dr. Kelly.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly received a high – if unexpected – honor on June 22 when his alma mater, the University of Hartford, bestowed an honorary doctor of humanities degree upon him. Kelly, a 1989 graduate of the Barney School of Business at UH, was recognized for his various humanitarian efforts, such as founding the Jerry Kelly-Mickey Bradley Pro-Am to raise money for Habitat for Humanity following Hurricane Katrina and participating in USO tours to visit soldiers in Iraq.

“My days at the University of Hartford were extremely fulfilling, and I got a fantastic education,” Kelly said at the induction. “I loved every second I was here. This is a great honor ... and I can’t wait to keep giving back to this community and this school.”

Kelly, who won his third career PGA Tour title in April at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, has served as honorary chair of the UH Home Field Advantage fundraising campaign and is member of Hartford University’s athletic hall of fame. As a member of the UH golf team, Kelly won four tournaments and notched 27 top-10 finishes.

“We are extremely proud of Jerry’s accomplishments as a professional golfer and the strong example he sets for our entire University community as a public citizen,” said university president Walter Harrison. “His commitment brings great credit to the University.”
