MONDAY ROUND-UP
At No. 63 in the world, Jerry Kelly was the highest-ranked golfer playing in the Puerto Rico Open over the weekend. Kelly capitalized on that advantage, coming home with a second-place finish at Trump International Golf Club.
Kelly, playing in Puerto Rico’s first-ever event on a weekend when the rest of the world’s best were at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship in Florida, finished at 13-under 275 (67-66-72-70), one shot behind winner Greg Kraft. After a third-round 72, Kelly started the final round in a tie for fourth place. But he closed with a 70 Sunday, recording a string of pars and two birdies on the day. He tied with Bo Van Pelt (67-66-72-70–275).
Wisconsin native Skip Kendall, playing in his fourth PGA Tour event of the season, tied for 54th at 288 (69-72-76-71). It was the first time he made a cut on the PGA Tour this year, and he earned $7,910 for the finish. Kendall narrowly missed earning a spot on the PGA Tour last fall. He finished 26th on the Nationwide Tour's money list; the top 25 earned full 2008 exemption.
Meanwhile, at the CA Championship, Madison’s Steve Stricker was able to finish his round Sunday at the rain-delayed event in Florida. Stricker fired nine birdies in his final round to close with a 9-under 63 and move from 31st to sixth place. He finished at 13-under 275 (71-68-73-63).
Tiger Woods' eight-tournament win streak came to and end Monday when Geoff Ogilvy claimed his second victory in a World Golf Championship event. Ogilvy finished at 17-under 271 (65-67-68-71). Woods finished alone in fifth place at 273 (67-66-72-68).
