Illinois wins cup

The team from “down south” won the 2008 Illinois-Wisconsin Cup over the weekend at Maple Bluff CC in Madison. Illinois beat Wisconsin by the score of 58-50 in the team amateur competition and in doing so took home victory for the second time in three tries. Wisconsin evened the series at 1-1 with a win in 2007.

The teams of 12 players each participated in bestball matches on Saturday, May 3, and individual matches on Sunday, May 4. The matches were contested at stroke play, awarding two points each for the front nine, back nine and final score.

Illinois led after the rainy first day, 19-17, despite the efforts of Wisconsin’s Mike Hilton and Stu Grendahl, who swept all six points in their match. Meanwhile, the duo of Todd Mitchell and Mark Esposito grabbed five points for Illinois after Mitchell shot a superb 66 with his own ball.

Illinois out-pointed Wisconsin on day two as well, 39-33, to finish the competition with a 58-50 victory. Leading the way for the Wisconsin team in singles play were Grendahl and Pat Boyle, who each won all six points in their matches.

Grendahl was the top point-earner for Wisconsin with the maximum of 12, while Mitchell earned 11 for Illinois.

“I’m very proud that the Illinois team was able to win the cup back,” said Illinois captain Larry Vaughan. “It was a hard-fought battle with some great golf played. We’re now up 2-1 in the series with Wisconsin, and it’s becoming quite a rivalry.”
