Two young guns walked away Monday with a win at the Wisconsin State Golf Association Two-Man Team Championship.
K.R. Rucker of Eau Claire G&CC in Altoona and Maxwell Hosking of Bridges GC in Madison earned a 13-shot victory in the 10th annual event over runners-up John Haines of The Bog in Saukville and Tom Halla of Naga-Waukee GC in Pewaukee, and Paul Zarek of Brown’s Lake GC in Burlington and Mark Bemowski of Kettle Moraine GC in Dousman. The tournament fits bestball, alternate-shot and individual stroke-play rounds into a two-day schedule.
In the first round – bestball – Rucker and Hosking, both 19, made nine birdies to finish at 9-under-par 63. That score gave them a four-shot lead heading into the second day of play.
Rucker and Hosking made six birdies and three bogeys to finish at 3-under-par 69 during alternate-shot. Hosking’s 68 during individual stroke play and Rucker’s 74 sealed the win. They finished at 14-under-par 274.
Haines and Halla shot rounds of 70-73-144 for a 1-under-par 287, and Zarek and Bemowski shot 69-78-140.
Last year’s winners, Mark Klapperich of Whispering Springs GC in Fond du Lac and Jeff Berenz of South Hills G&CC in Fond du Lac, tied for 31st at 20-over-par 308 (72-83-153).
