After one round, J.P. Hayes and Mark Wilson are in an eight-way tie for fourth in the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the weekend’s “other” PGA Tour event.
While the world’s top players are in Marana, Ariz. at the Accenture Match Play Championship, others are competing at El Camaleon GC in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Hayes and Wilson both shot 66 on Thursday and are three shots behind leader Bo Van Pelt. Van Pelt matched a career-low 63; his other 63 was at the 2002 Greater Milwaukee Open.
Hayes has missed the cut in 20 of the last 26 tournaments he’s entered. His last win was in 2002 at the John Deere Classic.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly is tied for 49th at even-par 70.
In Arizona, Madison’s Steve Stricker on Thursday lost his second match. He fell to Ernie Els, 3 and 2.
In his much-anticipated comeback, Tiger Woods also lost his second match. He was beaten, 4 and 3, by Tim Clark.
