Hayes, Kendall finish strong; Stricker falters in Arizona

While the past weekend wasn’t a good one for Steve Stricker – the No. 1 seed in the Accenture Match Play Championship lost in the first round – other players from around the state finished well at the PGA Tour’s stroke play event, the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun.

Wisconsin natives J.P. Hayes and Skip Kendall tied for 4th place in the event, held at El Camaleon GC in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Hayes was near the top of the leaderboard for all of the weekend, and he finished at 12-under 272 (65-67-69-71). Kendall, on the other hand, closed with a 64 Sunday and moved up the leaderboard 25 places. He shot 70-69-69-64.

Cameron Beckman won the event at 15-under 269 (65-68-69-67).

It was Kendall’s first event on the PGA Tour this season. He has competed twice on the Nationwide Tour, where he missed the cut and tied for 39th in the respective tournaments. He and Hayes earned $135,720 for their fourth-place finishes in Mexico.

Hayes’ best finish prior to this weekend came Feb. 14 at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, where he tied for fifth and earned $226,300.

Madison’s Jerry Kelly and Wisconsin native Mark Wilson tied for 28th at 5-under 279. Kelly shot rounds of 68-72-69-70, and Wilson shot rounds of 71-69-70-69.

In other golf news, England’s Ian Poulter went on to win the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship Sunday at The Ritz-Carlton GC in Marana, AZ. He beat fellow Brit Paul Casey 4 and 2 on the 34th hole of the championship match.
