MONDAY ROUND-UP
At the weekend’s "other" PGA Tour event, the Puerto Rico Open, Appleton native J.P. Hayes had his best finish since The Players Championship in 2007.
While the world's top players were at the CA Championship in Florida, Hayes, who lost his PGA Tour card and was playing on a sponsor exemption, tied for sixth at 10-under 278 (71-68-71-68). He made six birdies during his final round and earned $121,625.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly tied for ninth. He finished at 8-under 280 and shot rounds of 70-68-73-69. Kelly earned $91,000.
Michael Bradley won the event at Trump International GC in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. He finished at 14-under 274 (67-69-68-70).
The cold sweats Phil Mickelson broke into over the weekend had nothing to do with nerves or the prospect of winning his first World Golf Championship title.
Fighting a stomach virus that landed him in the hospital Saturday evening, Mickelson closed Sunday with seven straight pars for a 3-under 69 to win the CA Championship at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Doral, Fla. He finished at 19-under 269 (65-66-69-69) and beat Nick Watney by one stroke.
The only local player in the CA Championship, Madison’s Steve Stricker tied for 13th at 10-under-par 278. He started strong on Sunday, making eagle on the first hole. Stricker shot rounds of 69-70-70-69 and earned $97,142.
Tiger Woods, playing in his first stroke-play event since winning the U.S. Open last year, tied for ninth at 11-under 277 (71-70-68-68).
