Private club conditions for the daily-fee player
After operating as a private club for several years, Hawks Landing GC in Verona moved to semi-private status in 2009. Yes, memberships which include golf privileges and/or use of the tennis and pool facilities are still available, but now the course is also open on a limited basis to daily-fee players.
That’s great news because Hawks Landing, designed by John Harbottle III and opened in 2001, is a real beauty. The course conditions are always in line with private club standards, and the facility also offers a huge range and complete practice area.
The layout snakes through a housing development but leaves lots of room for golfers. In most cases, the holes are bordered by club-grabbing native grasses that are extremely difficult to play from and which offer a true penalty for players who miss the fairway. It’s usually advisable to simply punch out rather than try to advance the ball very far.
There are four sets of tees, and the course is a real test from the back (Maroon) markers, measuring 7,227 yards. Regardless of the distances, Hawks Landing shines a spotlight on the short game. The course is heavily bunkered and the huge greens offer numerous contours and ridges.
The back nine is more hilly than the front and closes with a potentially backbreaking finishing hole. The par-5 18th ranges between 469 yards and 587 yards, depending on the tee, and it’s uphill all the way, so a strong tee shot is almost mandatory. Take at least one extra club on the approach shot.
