MONDAY ROUND-UP
While Padraig Harrington was off winning his second straight major, not much was happening on the Wisconsin golf scene over the weekend.
Harrington closed the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills CC in Bloomfield Township, Mich. Sunday with a 4-under-par 66 and finished at 3-under 277 (71-74-66-66), two shots ahead of Sergio Garcia and Ben Curtis. He earned $1.35 million and moved to fourth in the FedExCup standings. Just three weeks ago, Harrington won the British Open.
Madison’s Steve Stricker, the only local player competing in the event, finished in a tie for 39th at 12-over-par 292 (71-75-77-69). Stricker earned $30,200, and he was pushed back to ninth in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings, which means he has to hope Paul Azinger will use him as one of his four captain’s selections.
On the Nationwide Tour, Scott Piercy recorded a 22-under-par 262 – a new tournament record – at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open and cruised to a two-shot victory over Daniel Summerhays, Hunter Haas and Spencer Levin.
Piercy jumped 88 spots – to 35th – on the money list and now has his eyes on finishing in the top-25, which would give him a 2009 PGA Tour card.
Local players Jon Turcott and David Roesch both failed to make the cut.
