WSGA SENIOR AMATEUR
Grendahl wins another title

It’s hard to imagine that just two years ago Stu Grendahl was questioning his ability to compete with the top players in Wisconsin senior amateur golf. Grendahl, the 2007 WSGA Senior Player of the Year, took home his second Wisconsin State Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship Tuesday at The Racine CC.

Grendahl, who plays out of Madison’s Cherokee CC, was tied for second with Steve Johnson of Ozaukee CC after the tournament’s first round. But he started out strong Tuesday with a birdie on the par-5 first hole, and though he recorded five bogeys for the day, he earned the right to have his name engraved on the WSGA Senior Amateur Championship trophy for the second time in three years. He finished at 2-over 146 (71-75), two shots ahead of Johnson 71-77–148). Richard Pfeil of Evergreen GC in Elkhorn, the first-round leader, finished third at 150 (70-80).

Following his win at the 2007 WSGA Senior Match Play Championship, Grendahl said the victory served as validation that his 2006 Senior Amateur title was more than just a “fluke.” Now, after winning 2007 Senior Player of the Year honors, making it to the quarterfinals at the 2007 United States Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship and winning the 2008 WSGA Senior Match Play Championship, it’s clear that Grendahl has earned his spot as the top senior player in the state.

Defending champion Gary Menzel tied for sixth at 8-over 150 (76-76), and also was medalist of the Super-Seniors division. Archie Dadian of Oakwood Park GC in Franklin won the Legends division at 18-over 162 (77-85).
