MONDAY ROUND-UP
Gerry wins Badger Invitational, team takes second

University of Wisconsin freshman Jessie Gerry tied a tournament and school record Sunday on her way to winning the 2008 Badger Invitational at University Ridge GC in Verona. Gerry was competing as an individual, but the women’s team was still able to come up with a second-place finish in its own tournament.

Going into the final round, Gerry was 7 under par at 137 (71-66), setting a Badger Invitational record for 18 and 36 holes, a school record for 36 holes and tying the school record for 18 holes. Gerry shot a 6-over 78 in the third round but still brought home the victory in just her second tournament for the Badgers. She finished at 1-under 215 (71-66-78), which ties the tournament record set in 2005 by Purdue’s Onnarin Sattayabanphot. Gerry finished in a tie for 94th Sept. 16 at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C.

As a team, the Badgers finished at 38-over 902 (2296-306-300). California took home the team title with a 25-over 889 (296-297-296). The Bears’ three-round score was the second best in tournament history.

Junior Molly Schemm led the Badgers in team play, finishing in a tie for fifth at 4-over 220 (74-73-75). It was Schemm’s first tournament for Wisconsin since transferring from Northern Iowa. Kelsey Verbeten was another top-10 finisher for the Badgers. She shot 223 (73-73-77) and tied for 10th place.

Also contributing to the team score were junior Heather Herrick (73-87-75–235), sophomore Carly Werwie (85-78-75–238) and senior Isabel Alvarez (76-82-81–239).

Besides Gerry, four other Badgers competed as individuals. Freshman Ellie Arkin and senior Jeana Dahl tied for 19th at 13-over 229. Junior Mary Ann Sztukowski had the best 54 holes of her career and finished in 22nd at 230 (74-77-79), and junior Beth Weinstein shot a final-round 80 to tie for 38th at 20-over 236 (80-76-80).

The women’s golf team plays Oct. 4-5 at the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.

On the PGA Tour, Camillo Villegas won his second straight tournament, but Vijay Singh was awarded the FedExCup.

Villegas overcame a five-shot deficit with six birdies on his final 11 holes of regulation and won the Tour Championship on the first extra hole against Sergio Garcia for his second straight – and second ever – victory. He finished at 7-under 273 (72-66-69-66).

Singh closed with a 70 and tied for 22nd in the 30-man field, but that didn’t really matter. He had pretty much wrapped up his $10 million prize two weeks ago, and all he had to do to win the FedExCup was finish 72 holes of the Tour Championship and sign for the correct score.

Madison’s Steve Stricker tied for 24th at 10-over 290 (74-74-70-72).
