USGA QUALIFYING
Four Wisconsin junior players have advanced through sectional qualifying to lock down spots in the the United States Golf Association’s two national championships for players ages 17 and younger.
The U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will be held July 21-28 at Shoal Creek in Alabama. In attendance will be Michael Sorenson of Hartland, who was medalist in Wisconsin’s sectional qualifying event held at North Shore GC in Mequon on June 23. Sorenson recorded a 36-hole score of 147 to advance to the championship.
Just two strokes behind at 149 was Andrew Steinhofer of Madison, who will also participate in the national event at Shoal Creek.
Mark Wittchow of Onalaska emerged as the second alternate at North Shore. Wittchow shot 150.
Meanwhile, Tory Bauman of River Hills shot 77 to advance to the U.S. Girls Junior Championship, scheduled for July 21-26 at Hartford GC in West Hartford, Conn. Bauman was one of four players to qualify for the championship at a sectional event held June 24 at Midlothian CC in Illinois.
Jaclyn Shepherd of Delafield shot 82 at Midlothian CC to earn the second alternate spot.
Erin Sharpee of Green Bay will also participate in the U.S. Girls Junior after she shot 76 on June 25 at Persimmon Woods GC in Weldon Spring, Mo. Sharpee was one of four players at Persimmon Woods to advance to the championship.
Finally, Lindsay Danielson of Osceola is the second alternate following a sectional qualifier at North Dakota’s Oxbow CC. Danielson shot 82.
The defending U.S. Boys Junior champion is Cory Whitsett of Houston, who won the 2007 title at the age of 15 at Boone Valley GC in Augusta, Mo. The reigning U.S. Girls Junior champion is Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., who won the title last summer at the tender age of 14 at Tacoma C&GC in Lakewood, Wash.
