FEATURED COURSE
Devil’s Head Resort has earned a reputation as one of Wisconsin’s favorite downhill skiing destinations since opening in 1971, and the resort has also offered golf since day one. But any players who haven’t visited in recent years are due for a pleasant surprise.
The Devil’s Head golf operation has undergone a major facelift since 2000, which reconfigured some holes and created two distinct 18-hole golf courses called the Glacier Course and the Prairie Glen Course. Both courses offer plenty of elevation changes as they traverse the ski hill setting.
The Glacier, measuring 6,773 yards from the back tees, runs along the top of a high bluff – part of the locally famous Baraboo Range – and provides beautiful vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys and Lake Wisconsin in the distance. The Prairie Glen, at 6,372 yards from the tips, wanders up and down the wooded bluff as well, but it also offers several holes at the foot of the ski hill.
All the holes were designed by Wisconsin golf course architect Art Johnson, and the design includes some unique obstacles in addition to the occasionally severe elevation changes. In particular, the par-4 13th hole on the Glacier Course features an old wall which a former farmer who worked this land constructed from stones plucked from his fields. The wall was left in place during the original construction in the early ‘70s and today it lies about halfway between tee and green. For safety reasons, players get a free drop if their drive ends up too close to the wall.
