The PGA Tour has suspended troubled golfer John Daly for the second time in his 18-year career.
Daly, 42, told the Associated Press that he has been suspended for six months for conduct that brought unwanted publicity to himself and the tour, including an October 2008 night he spent sobering up in a North Carolina jail.
“Is is fair that I got suspended? It’s not fair in reality, but it’s probably fair in perception,” he told the AP earlier this week.
This is the second time Daly has been suspended, and at least two other times he agreed to take time off the tour to get his life in order.
The last time Daly played on the PGA Tour was when he missed the cut Oct. 17, 2008, in Las Vegas. Ten days later, police in Winston-Salem, N.C., said he appeared intoxicated outside a Hooters restaurant, and he was taken to jail to sleep it off.
Other incidents that led up to his suspension include doing a regional television interview wearing only blue jeans – no shirt or shoes – while promoting a golf course in Missouri, and hitting a drive off a beer can at the Buick Open pro-am, an event which featured Kid Rock in overalls.
Daly told the AP that he hopes to use 2009 – once his suspension is lifted – to turn his career around. Until then, he will play on the European Tour.
The PGA Tour did not comment on the suspension.
