MONDAY ROUND-UP
For the first time since early April, Steve Stricker has cracked the top-20 in a PGA Tour event.
Stricker’s second and third rounds – during which he shot a 64 and 66, respectively – are the ones that boosted him to a tie for 18th place at the AT&T National. He started the final round in second place, but closed with a 3-over 73. Stricker finished at 6-under-par 274 and earned $81,000.
Following a spectacular 2007 season during which he finished second in the FedExCup standings and No. 4 in the Official World Golf Ranking, Stricker started strong in 2008. He had a second-place finish at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship and finished in the top-10 in a handful of other tournaments. But Stricker struggled in late spring and early summer; he has failed to make the cut in five of his last eight events.
But the real story at Congressional CC in Bethesda, Md., was Anthony Kim. The 23-year-old’s victory Sunday made him the first person under age 25 since Tiger Woods to win twice in the same season. He unleashed a bogey-free 5-under 65 for a two-shot victory over Fredrik Jacobson. Kim’s first win this year came May 4 at the Wachovia Championship.
Wisconsin native Mark Wilson tied for 44th at 1-under 279, and J.P. Hayes failed to make the cut.
