MONDAY ROUND-UP
Cabrera takes Green Jacket to Argentina

For the first time in history, the Green Jacket is headed to Argentina.

Angel Cabrera survived a two-hole sudden death playoff with Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell Sunday at Augusta National to win the 73rd Masters.

"This is a great moment, the dream of any golfer to win the Masters," Cabrera said through an interpreter during the Green Jacket ceremony. "I'm so emotional I can barely talk."

Two shots behind with two holes to play, Cabrera fought his way into the playoff when the 48-year-old Perry bogeyed the final two holes. Cabrera drove into the trees on the first playoff hole and then hit a tree, but he was able to save par with an 8-foot putt. He won on the second extra hole when Perry missed the green and made yet another bogey.

Campbell was eliminated on the first playoff hole when he found a bunker from the middle of the 18th fairway then watched his par putt lip out.

Earlier in the day, it looked as though Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, who were paired together, would make a run for the lead. Mickelson tied a Masters record with a 30 on the front nine when he made six birdies. Woods caught him with three birdies in a four-hole stretch – on holes 13-16 – but finished his round with two bogeys. Mickelson lost his momentum on the par-3 No. 12 when he hit into a creek and made double bogey and then missed a 4-foot eagle putt and 5-foot birdie putt down the stretch. Mickelson closed with a 67, three shots back, and finished alone in fifth place at 9-under 279 (73-68-71-67). Woods tied for sixth (70-72-70-68–280) with Steve Flesch and Madison’s Steve Stricker.

Stricker, who missed the cut in the 2007 and ’08 Masters tournaments, was happy with his fifth-place finish.

"It gives me a big shot of confidence, knowing I can play," Stricker said Sunday. "I played consistently every day, which is very good.

"I look forward to coming back next year, where I wasn't looking forward to coming here so much this year just because of my past performance. But I'm looking forward to next year already."

Between the second and fourth rounds, Stricker went 42 holes without a bogey, his career-best stretch in a major. He closed Sunday with a 1-under 71 and finished at 8-under 280 (72-69-68-71).

The UW-Stevens Point women's golf team on Saturday won the Carleton College Invitational at Northfield GC in Northfield, Minn.

The Pointers, who have finished in first place six times during the 2008-09 season, finished at 72-over 648 (326-322).

Junior Jessica Urban led the Pointers, shooting a tournament-low 76 on day one and finishing at 13-over 157. Urban finished the tournament in second place, just one stroke off the leader, Jordan Matheson of Macalester College.

Danelle Olson tied for fourth, shooting an 18-over 162. Nacheynah Green tied for ninth, shooting a 22-over 166. Michelle Pascavis finished in 11th place at 23-over 167, and Amanda Dlugopolski tied for 15th at 27-over 171.

The UW-Eau Claire women finished in third place. The Blugolds shot 345-323 for a two-day score of 92-over 668.

Emily Swift was the Blugolds' top finisher, taking third place (81-78–159). Katie Maurer and Torie Ives tied for 12th place at 168 while Lauren Gault tied for 20th at 173. Freshman Sara Mattes, competing as an individual, tied for 18th at 172.

The Wisconsin men's golf team finished in ninth place at the 13-team Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio. Seniors Dan Woltman and Pat Duffy finished in a tie for 21st to lead the Badgers.

After shooting a 308 and 305 in Saturday's two rounds, UW shot a 307 on Sunday. The Badgers' three-round total of 920 put them two shots out of a tie for seventh place and six back of sixth place. Northwestern won the team portion of the event by two strokes over East Tennessee State. Ohio State’s Brad Wright won with a 5-over 218 (71-71-76).

Woltman shot his best round of the tournament Sunday – a 74 – and moved up leaderboard seven spots into 21st place. He finished at 15-over 228 (79-75-74). Duffy started the day in a tie for ninth place, but after shooting a 79 he fell back into a tie for 21st with Woltman and two other golfers. Duffy shot rounds of 76-73-79.

Senior Danny Zimmerman moved up a few spots after shooting a 76 on Sunday for a three-round total of 230 (76-78-76) and a share of 26th place. Junior Jordan Elsen dropped a couple of spots after a third-round 78. His final score of 235 (78-79-78) was good for a share of 43rd. Senior Tyler Obermueller finished in a tie for 71st at 247 (78-88-81).

The Badgers are in action again next weekend at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
