U.S. BANK CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER
In a field of 51, Milwaukee’s Mike Johnston was the only local player on Monday to qualify for the U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee.
Johnston, a PGA professional at Green Fields Golf Center in Milwaukee, finished in second place at 4-under-par 68, three shots behind medalist Jake Roos of San Diego. Johnston carded an amazing seven birdies in a row during the qualifier, which was held at Fire Ridge GC in Grafton. Roos also recorded seven birdies throughout the course of his round, but unlike Johnston, he played bogey-free golf.
Josh Esler of Wauconda, Ill., and Deane Pappas of Winter Garden, Fla., were the third and fourth qualifiers. They finished at 3-under-par 69.
The U.S. Bank Championship will be played Thursday through Sunday at Brown Deer Park GC in Milwaukee.
A duo of players who call Milwaukee County Park courses home finished atop the leaderboard Monday in the WSGA Net Partners Tournament No. 5, held at Broadlands GC in North Prairie.
Terry Teske of Currie Park GC in Wauwatosa and Jeff Kapp of Dretzka Park GC in Milwaukee won the event with a 21-under-par 195. Tying for second at 20-under 196 were the teams of Dan Surges of Oakwood Park GC in Franklin and Margie Surges of Whitnall Park GC in Hales Corners, and Jason Mross and Michael Dietz of Edgewood GC in Big Bend.
A total of eight qualifiers and two alternates earned berths to the WSGA Net Partners Championship on Sept. 12 at Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina in Arkdale. Net Partners Tournaments are open to all amateur golfers, male and female, who are at least 21 years old and are affiliated with a WSGA member club. The competition is comprised of partners who do not need to belong to the same member club. Teams may consist of two men, two women or a man and a woman.
