U.S. OPEN QUALIFYING
Amateur Michael Bielawski, a resident of West Allis and a member of the Marquette University golf team, led the way in local qualifying for the U.S. Open this week at Blue Mound G&CC in Wauwatosa.
Bielawski shot 2-under-par 68 to beat Nationwide Tour player Jon Turcott of Middleton by one stroke. In fact, Bielawski was the only amateur to finish in the top-10 at Blue Mound.
In all, six players advanced to the sectional qualifying level. Joining Bielawski and Turcott are Keith Dory of Milwaukee and Ryan Helminen of Appleton, who both shot 70, and Neal Grusczynski of West Allis and Chad Cantwell of Twin Lakes, who both shot 71.
The two alternates are, in order, Kyle Spahr of Barrington, Ill., and Garrett Jones of Madison. Spahr and Jones each shot 73.
Sectional qualifying will take place between May 28 and June 2. The 108th U.S. Open will be contested on June 12-15 at Torrey Pines GC in San Diego, Calif. See scores.
