Mark Bemowski rolled to his second title in the Wisconsin State Golf Association Senior Match Play Championship on Thursday, defeating Jim Ignatowski by the score of 5 and 4 in the final match. The tournament, for amateurs 55 and older, was held at Morningstar GC in Waukesha.
The 63-year-old Bemowski, who is a member at Kettle Moraine GC in Dousman, took a 5-up lead with a birdie on the par-512 hole, then both players recorded pars on the 13th and 14th holes to wrap up the tournament. Ignatowski, a player from Whitnall Park GC in Hales Corners, sealed his own fate early on with several bogeys. Ignatowski, 60, made six of them through the first 11 holes and never recorded a birdie during the match.
Bemowski made three birdies and three bogeys in the 14 holes that the match lasted.
Bemowski, a member of the WSGA Hall of Fame, also won the WSGA Senior Match Play in 2004 and finished runner-up in ‘07. He won the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in 2004.
In semifinal action on Wednesday, Ignatowski defeated Alex Antonio of Tripoli CC in Milwaukee in 20 holes, and Bemowski beat Steve Johnson of Ozaukee CC in Mequon, 6 and 5.
The tournament opens with an 18-hole qualifying round to establish the 32-player match play bracket. The medalist in qualifying was Jim Rollefson of Tuckaway CC in Franklin, who shot 69. Tied for second with rounds of 70 were Bemowski and Bill Rhyme, a member of Thornberry Creek at Onieda.
In the Super-Senior Division finale, held on Wednesday, Jim Thiel of Morningstar GC won the title with a 6-and-4 victory over Phil Plautz Sr., who plays out of Krueger Haskell GC in Beloit. The medalist in Super-Senior qualifying was Tom Best of West Bend CC, who shot 71.
The Super-Senior Division is open to players 65 and older and features a 16-player match play bracket.
