The UW-Madison’s men’s and women’s golf teams participated in Big Ten championship play over the weekend, but both teams finished in the middle of the pack.
The Badger women landed in sixth place in the team competition – their best Big Ten finish since 2004 – after shooting rounds of 314-292-304-313–1,223 to finish at 71 over par at Penn State GC in University Park, Pa. Purdue won the team championship at 17-over-par 1,169 (298-288-286-297).
Among individuals, the UW was led by freshman Carly Werwie of Kenosha, who tied for 14th place overall with rounds of 76-73-77-76-302. Sophomore Kelsey Verbeten of Green Bay tied for 26th place (77-72-76-82–307), and senior Katie Elliott of Madison tied for 32nd (80-73-81-76–310).
Rounding out the scoring for the Badgers were junior Natasha Lopez of Paraguay in a tie for 38th place (82-74-79-79–314), junior Isabel Alvarez of Spain in a tie for 49th (81-79-76-85–321) and junior Jeana Dahl of Fargo, N.D., who tied for 54th (81-83-75-83–322).
Medalist honors went to Maria Hernandez of Purdue, who shot 75-71-66-69–281.
On the men’s side, UW placed eighth among the 11 teams at Forest Akers West GC in East Lansing, Mich. Playing on their home course, the Michigan State Spartans won the team title with scores of 296-305-302-296-1,173 to finish at 21 over par.
Among individuals, UW was led by junior Dan Woltman of Beaver Dam and junior Tyler Obermueller of River Falls, who tied for 17th place. Woltman shot 76-79-73-72–300, and Obermueller shot 71-79-75-75–300.
Junior Danny Zimmerman of Verona shot 74-75-78-75–302 to tie for 22nd place. Senior Jeff Kaiser of Onalaska shot 75-78-76-74-303 and tied for 26th place, and junior Pat Duffy of Appleton shot 78-73-81-82–314 to tie for 46th.
Jorge Campillo of Indiana was the individual champion among men. Campillo shot 69-71-71-67–278 to win the title by two strokes.
