COLLEGE GOLF
The UW men’s golf team took sixth place Tuesday at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., the first tournament of the spring 2008 season. With a score of 904 (308-304-292), the Badgers were 39 strokes behind winner Indiana.
Marquette’s team turned in its best performance of the tournament Tuesday – a 290 – with each player recording his best score in the final round. That 290 boosted the team to a tie for 10th place, after they entered the final round tied for 13th in the 19-team tournament. The Golden Eagles finished at 908 (314-304-290).
Junior Mike Van Sickle closed with a 1-under 71 and recorded five birdies. He tied for 10th at 223 (80-72-71). Van Sickle was followed by seniors Mike Bielawski (77-75-74) and Ted Gray (76-78-72), who tied for 30th at 226.
Sophomore Jordan Elsen led the way for UW with a 225 (79-75-71) and tied for 23rd. Tyler Obermueller tied for 42nd at 229 (77-75-77). Juniors Dan Woltman and Danny Zimmerman tied for 47th at 230. Pat Duffy, who led UW in the first two rounds, struggled in the final round and closed with an 80. He tied for 52nd.
Indiana’s Seth Brandon was medalist at 216 (69-75-72).
Marquette returns to action March 24 at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate hosted by Southeastern Louisiana. Next up for the UW men is the OSU Kempler Intercollegiate from April 12-13 in Columbus, Ohio. Click here for results.
