The Badger men's golf team
opened the season Sunday and Monday at the 12-team Minnesota Gopher
Invitational in Wayzata, Minn., placing eighth at 893 (306-294-300).
Southern
Methodist University was the wire-to-wire leader, winning the 54-hole
event with a 9-under-par 855. Arkansas was second at 865 and the hosts
were third at 872.
SMU’s Kelly Kraft ran away with medalist
honors, shooting a 15-under 201. Ben Pisani of Minnesota was second
with a 7-under-par 209.
Jordan Elsen was the top Badger individual, tying for 14th with a 3-over par 219 (72-70-77). Making his collegiate debut, freshman Michael Sorenson started the day tied for 43rd and moved up to a tie for 21st with his 76-75-71–222. Another freshman, Anthony Aicher
of Wausau, found his comfort zone in the third round, shooting the best
18-hole round for UW – a 69. He finished in a tie for 30th at
8-over-par 224 (80-75-69).
Redshirt freshman Brady Keegan tied for 62nd with at 234 (78-80-76). Freshman Sam Frank
concluded his first college tournament in a tie for 65th at 236
(82-74-80). Junior Craig Cerbins rounded out Badger scoring by tying
for 69th at 238 (81-74-83).
The team next travels to the Wolverine Invitational Sept. 26-27 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
