MONDAY ROUND-UP March 3, 2008
It had been three years, four months and 29 days since his last PGA Tour victory, but over the weekend Ernie Els snapped his dry spell by winning the Honda Classic at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The South African started Sunday’s final round three strokes behind Luke Donald, Matt Jones and Mark Calcavecchia, but four birdies in the first seven holes quickly moved him to the top. Els, who has over 60 worldwide victories, finished with a 67 on the final day and a 6-under-par 274 for the tournament. Donald came in second at 5-under 275.
Madison’s Jerry Kelly was the top local finisher, tying for 20th at 1-over 281 (68-71-72-70). He earned $64,075 for the finish.
Pewaukee native Mark Wilson, the event’s defending champion, and Appleton native J.P. Hayes both failed to make the cut.
