WIAA STATE BOYS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS
Arrowhead, Edgewood, Roncalli win team titles

For the third consecutive year, Hartland Arrowhead won the Division 1 team golf title at the WIAA State Boys Golf Championships held at University Ridge GC in Verona Monday and Tuesday.

Wausau East’s Anthony Aicher – a University of Wisconsin recruit – won the individual title with a 5-under 139 (71-68). He set a new all-division state record for 36 holes. Aicher started the day with consecutive bogeys, but six birdies down the stretch made up for it. He beat Madison Memorial’s Tim McCormick by four shots (75-68–143). Aicher’s Lumberjacks finished 11th out of 16 teams.

Arrowhead was led by senior Mike Sorenson, also a University of Wisconsin recruit, who tied for seventh at 146 (76-71). As a team, the Warhawks shot 596 to best Kettle Moraine (607), Lake Geneva Badger (615), Milwaukee Marquette (615) and Homestead (618).

In Division 2, Madison Edgewood finished at 611 and beat Green Bay Notre Dame by 21 strokes.

Edgewood senior Cody Strang, a UW hockey recruit, was the individual medalist for the second year in a row. He finished at even-par 144 (74-70) and beat Edgerton’s Dan Ozga by three strokes. Strang had an up-and-down front nine, with three bogeys and three birdies, but he made two birdies on the back nine and finished at 2-under 70.

At the Division 3 level, Manitowoc Roncalli finished at 647, eight strokes ahead of Cambridge.

Ladysmith senior Jake Nelson also won his second consecutive title, finishing at 147 (74-73), three strokes ahead of Michael Mortenson of Iola-Scandanavia. Nelson advanced to the state meet as an individual all four years of high school; Mortenson also played as an individual.

Roncalli was led by Anthony Nett, who finished in eighth place at 17-over 161 (80-81).
