Winner’s circle elusive for pro and am

The “Tony and Tiger Show” was on display over the weekend in California, and it’s fair to say the result fell short of what either of them had hoped.

Tiger Woods made his 2012 PGA Tour debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on California’s Monterey Peninsula with Burlington native and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as his amateur partner.

The pro-am portion of the event includes PGA Tour players and their partners, who are celebrities and amateur golfers whose handicaps are used in calculating the scores.

Woods and Romo, who played at scratch for the tournament, tied for 17th place in the pro-am portion of the tournament. Their final scores were 65-67-63-68–263.

Meanwhile, Woods had a forgettable day on the course Sunday, shooting 75 while playing partner Phil Mickelson shot 64 and ran away with the pro division. It was Mickelson’s fourth AT&T Pebble Beach victory.

Tying for the pro-am win were Padraig Harrington and amateur partner J.P. McManus and Brian Harman and amateur partner Gregg Ontiveros. Harman and Ontiveros were in the lead at 35 under par when they walked off the 18th green Sunday. But Harrington and McManus matched them on the 18th hole for the tie. No playoff is held for the amateur portion of the tournament.

Over the first three days of play, all 156 pro-am teams played three courses: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill GC and the Shore course at Monterey Peninsula GC. Only the top 60 pros and the top 25 teams get to play the final round on Sunday at Pebble Beach.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a 6-handicap, teamed with pro partner D.J. Trahan, but they missed the 54-hole cut. Trahan and Rodgers shot 65-67-70–202 to finish at 12 under par.

Kohler Co. president and CEO David Kohler also participated in the event. Kohler, an 18-handicap, played with pro Kris Blanks. They shot 67-69-69–205 to finish at 9 under par.
