Tons of knowledge in a ‘little red book’

Penick’s pride is now an eBook

One of the greatest golf instruction books ever written is getting a serious upgrade. Harvey Penick’s “Little Red Book,” which was published in 1992 and has sold more than 1.9 million copies in the United States, is now available in an eBook format for iPhone, iPad, Kindle, PC, Mac, Android devices, Nook and more.

The eBook versions cost $12.99, wherever eBooks are sold.

The “Little Red Book” was co-written by Penick, the longtime head pro at Austin CC and coach of the University of Texas golf team, and author Bud Shrake.

The “Little Red Book” and Penick himself are known for their simple, practical lessons. The book evolved from Penick’s habit over 60 years of jotting down his observations on the golf swing, as well as chipping and putting, in a little red notebook he carried with him. He initially intended to pass the notebook down to his golf pro son Tinsley Penick, who succeeded him at Austin CC, but, late in his life, Penick instead decided to publish the information.

With modest expectations, the “Little Red Book” was published in 1992. It would eventually spend 52 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list.

Penick and Shrake wrote four other highly respected golf instructional books now available in eBook formats. They are “Little Green Book: And If You Play Golf, You’re My Friend” (1993); “For All Who Love The Game” (1995); and “The Game For A Lifetime,” which Penick and Shrake were in the process of writing when Penick passed away in 1995 at the age of 90.

All of the Penick-Shrake golf books are published by Simon & Schuster.

Penick’s students include some legendary professional players, such as Mickey Wright, Kathy Whitworth, Betsy Rawls, Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw. Crenshaw famously won the 1995 Masters a week after Penick died and just a couple weeks after he got a final putting lesson from his longtime teacher. Penick was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.
