Minocqua CC head pro Peter Nomm has been named the 2012 Wisconsin PGA professional of the year. Nomm leads a list of special award winners recently announced by the Wisconsin PGA Section.

Nomm has spent the last 11 years as the head professional and general manager at private Minocqua CC. He serves on several WPGA committees, including the WPGA board of directors.

“There is no greater professional achievement than the recognition one receives from his peers,” Nomm said in a press release announcing the award.

Meanwhile, the 2012 WPGA teacher of the year is Brendan Lock. Locke, the director of instruction at GolfTEC in Wauwatosa, has been active with The First Tee of Milwaukee County.

Bob Neumann of Whitnall Park GC in Hales Corners has won the 2012 Horton Smith Award, given annually to a WPGA member who contributes to the education and betterment of their fellow PGA professionals. Neumann has set up numerous seminars and other educational events for WPGA members over the years.

Wes Warren, the head professional at North Shore CC in Mequon, was named 2012 WPGA Junior Golf Leader thanks to the family oriented junior program he runs at the club. This marks the second time that Warren has won the award in the past four years.

Joel Weitz, the general manager and owner of Vitense Golfland in Madison, has won the WPGA President’s Plaque for his support of PGA growth-of-the-game initiatives. Weitz also won the President’s Plaque in 2006.

The 2012 Bill Strausbaugh Award winner is Jim Richerson, the general manager of the Kohler Co. courses at Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits. The award is presented each year to an individual who has shown outstanding integrity and a commitment to mentoring fellow PGA professionals. Over his career, Richerson has mentored 18 assistants who have gone on to become PGA golf professionals.

Dave Kemnitz of Blackwolf Run is the TaylorMade-adidas assistant professional of the year. Kemnitz was elected as a member of the PGA of America in 2005 and has worked at the Kohler Co. courses for the last seven years.

The WPGA also annually selects three merchandisers of the year. This year, Mark Bergman of Merrill Hills GC in Waukesha won the award for merchandisers at private facilities, Ryan Wieme of University Ridge in Verona won the award for public facilities and Josue Reyes of Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run was named merchandiser of the year among resort facilities.
