The Wisconsin PGA on Tuesday announced that University Ridge GC in Verona has been selected as site of the 2015 Wisconsin State Open.
“After reviewing the qualifications of University Ridge Golf Course, the WPGA Tournament Policy Board felt that the facility, (UW) Athletics Department, and the Madison area would be a fabulous fit for this great championship,” Joe Stadler, executive director of the WPGA, wrote in a letter of confirmation to the course.
The Wisconsin State Open began in 1919 and has been held every year but two during World War II. It would be the first time for the event to visit the Madison area since 1995, when Eddie Terasa won at Maple Bluff CC. No dates have been set for the 2015 event.
University Ridge is the official home course of the University of Wisconsin men’s and women’s golf teams. Construction was completed in 2008 on a $3.1 million project to extend the length of the course in order for it to to remain competitive. Opened in 1991 with a championship distance of 6,888 yards, the course has to been lengthened to 7,259 yards to accommodate the longer hitting players and to attract some major tournaments, including NCAA national and regional tournaments.
Wisconsin associate athletic director John Chadima, who oversees the golf programs and University Ridge, saw this announcement as a validation that the changes made in the course in 2008 make it worthy of elite championships.
“We lengthened the course and made it a strategic setup for golfers of all levels,” he said. “This commitment by the Wisconsin PGA confirms the improvements we made truly make University Ridge Golf Course one of the elite collegiate courses as well as one of the best in the state.”
